KERAPEP

New peptides to restore hair properties
The KeraPep project proposes an alternative solution to the harsh alkaline reducing agents widely used in cosmetic hair treatments, proposing the use of peptide formulations that act at neutral pH to change the shape of human hair.
The KeraPep solution represents a series of patented nanometric peptides, sequences of 10-13 amino acids derived from human keratin genes, which can be used as hair fibre relaxers without damaging the hair. The proven effects in restoring the mechanical properties of hair damaged by over-bleaching, make KeraPep peptides excellent candidates for the development of new products for ethnic hair, which is often highly damaged, or for universal use, to restore daily hair fibres from aggressions, as environmental and consumer-friendly solutions.
This initiative resulted in the creation of Khairpep, an innovative treatment that revitalizes damaged hair strands. Subsequently, the brand was acquired by Aquis and underwent a rebranding, becoming known as K18TM, a premium biomimetic product offering a permanent solution for molecular restoring of hair. K18TM products achieved significant commercial success and was acquired by Unilever Prestige Group in December 2023.
Project co-funded by Portugal2020 and the European Structural and Investment Funds, Horizon 2020.
